About Us

Our history grounds the Bartley Group with shared values, while the strategic direction set by the Bartley family and our Board help define our future.

Our Story

Founded by Robert Bartley in 2020, Bartley Group Holdings is a family-owned holding company focused on building inter-generational prosperity. BGH is run by family members who are dedicated to maintaining the company's legacy, and are supported by external advisors and a motivated leadership team. Through a commitment to community and innovation, BGH continues to thrive while honouring its roots.

Our Founder

Robert Bartley QSM

Robert Bartley was a Whanganui businessman renowned for his work ethic, integrity, humility and commitment to supporting his community.

 

Working multiple jobs before and after school as a teenager, and with a passion for motor vehicles, Rob's first venture into business ownership was his purchase of what became known as the Alma Rd Petrol Station in 1970, when he was just 19.

From 1970-2020, Rob purchased and developed multiple local businesses and expanded operations overseas to Canada. In 2020, he established the Bartley Group Advisory Board to support governance of the company and appointed his son, Brendon, as Managing Director.

Rob's approach was to build business on trust, always backing people and recognising their individual strengths. His business style was epitomised by his often-cited belief, “Nobody is bigger than the broom” – no one is too important to roll up their sleeves and do the hard stuff. That attitude built Rob's businesses and is still the compass guiding the Bartley Group today.

After a courageous battle with cancer, Rob passed away on 17 March 2021. His legacy lives on through his wife Ann and their children: Angela, John, Brendon, and Sarah.

Today, Brendon works alongside family, the governance board, and the BGH leadership team to ensure the Group's continued success.
